Mi querida familia,
This week was awesome. From Monday-Sunday we worked every
day pretty much all day in our sector. I felt like a real missionary again
which was awesome. We talked to everyone and we found a lot of people that we
think could be baptized in September and October, but we’re going to keep
finding and praying that the people we’re finding can become converted to the
gospel. President already has 2 months in the mission and he just had his
training for new mission presidents in Argentina with the Area presidency, so
we’re starting to see some real changes in the mission. Part of these changes
is that he wants everyone to be working in their sectors the maximum amount of
time, and that includes us thankfully. We’ll still have crazy weeks, but it’ll
mostly be the first week of changes and zone conferences because we will no
longer go to interviews and many other things that we had to do with President
Meservy before, he can now do on his own. So we’re excited! With that change,
plus the change of sector, I wouldn’t mind finishing my mission here in Los
Olivos, but we’ll see how it goes.
In our last stake (Zapadores) we had been participating in
the choir in preparation for the stake conference (this past Sunday) but then
two weeks before, we were changed to a different stake. They had one rehearsal
without us and then asked President Meservy for permission so we could go back.
Imagine the talent level of the choir, if WE were holding the thing together. Hahaha
Anyways, we were in the Stake Conference of Zapadores and
there were a couple things that made me think. The first came from the current
temple president of the Santiago Temple. He explained that temple presidents
serve for 3 years and as their 3 years were coming to a close, they were given
the call to serve another 3 years. “Yes”, he and his wife said. The general
authority asked them if they wanted to pray about it. “No”, they said, “we are
a family of covenants. That decision was made a long time ago”.
The other came from Elder Johnston, a senior missionary from
our mission. He said that one night while he was serving as a young missionary
in Mexico he lay on his mattress after a long, tiring day. He thought to
himself, “I could preach the gospel every day for the rest of my life.” He is
now on his 4th mission including 3 years as mission president in
Mexico. That made me think that in some way or another I’ll have the
opportunity to preach the gospel every day of my life and that is what I plan
on doing. I don’t know how, but I really do agree with the prophet Joseph Smith
when he said, “After all that has been said, the greatest and most important
duty is to preach the gospel.”
If you want to know where I live, look up Cerro San
Cristobal. We live 30 seconds from the base, on the side of Recoleta not
Providencia. We’re ready to work lots again this week!!
Talk to you later,
Elder Birrell
